Low exposure digital radiographs or x-rays are relatively new. Although dental x-rays have always been safe, with digital x-rays, you are exposed to up to 80% less radiation than with the old method. In addition to lower radiation exposure, instead of staring at an x-ray the size of a postage stamp, digital x-rays can be enlarged right in front of you on a separate computer monitor.
The procedure is just as painless as previous methods and, except for the outcome, you probably would not notice any difference at all! The x-ray is taken much like before. A protective blanket is placed over your body and a film is placed within your mouth. Once the x-ray is taken, the film is placed into a seperate canister that then captures a full resolution image and stores it to your digital file.
