Emergency Care Q & A

What is emergency care?

Emergency dental care is the treatment of oral injuries or pain requiring immediate attention. Emergency care is usually sought out when your teeth have suffered some sort of severe physical trauma, like getting knocked out or significantly cracked, but it can be necessary for a wide range of situations, such as a severely infected tooth.

Seeking emergency treatment at Dental Care By Design within 30 minutes of your injury could make the difference between saving or losing your tooth.

Do I need emergency care?

Emergency care can be necessitated by a number of situations, such as a sport-related injury or biting down too hard on something. Some conditions that are considered to be dental emergencies include:

  • A knocked-out tooth
  • A severely cracked tooth
  • A tooth with a significant piece missing
  • Nerve damage
  • Severe tooth or mouth pain
  • Bleeding inside your mouth from your gums, cheeks, or tongue
  • Swelling in your mouth, gums, or tongue

Some situations, such as a tooth that’s suffered a minor fracture or has been slightly chipped, don’t necessarily require emergency treatment, but it’s always better to be safe rather than sorry. If you think that you’re experiencing a dental emergency, call the offices of Dental Care By Design to help determine whether you need emergency treatment.

What should I do until my appointment?

If you act quickly, you stand a good chance of being able to save your damaged tooth. Whatever your condition, rinse your mouth and call Dental Care By Design for an emergency appointment.

When a tooth has been knocked entirely out of its socket, clean the inside of your mouth with warm water. Handle the tooth by the crown and be sure to not touch its roots. If you can, try to place the tooth back in its socket. Bite down softly on a piece of wet gauze or a moistened tea bag. Take great care to not swallow the tooth.

If you can’t get your tooth back into the empty socket, keep it in a glass of milk or saliva until you get to the dentist. This will help to prevent the roots from drying out.

If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, book an appointment immediately with Dental Care By Design by calling the offices or using the convenient online booking tool.
